This Noblesville home had solid bones - a nice modern farmhouse exterior with great architectural detail. But the front yard wasn't keeping up. Flat, unfinished landscape beds with no real structure can make even a great-looking home feel incomplete from the street.

Here's what we put together: a curved retaining wall running the full width of the front bed, built with dark block that ties directly into the home's color palette. That wall does two things at once - it gives the bed a clean, defined edge and adds a small grade change that makes the whole front yard feel intentional. The curve is a nice touch too. Straight walls are fine, but the arc here follows the natural flow of the yard and softens what could have been a very rigid look.

Inside the wall, we went with black decorative rock as the ground cover. It's low-maintenance, stays put, and makes every plant in the bed pop. We paired that with a mix of low-growing ornamental grasses along the front edge, rounded shrubs spaced evenly across the bed, and a statement tree centered right in front of the entry. That tree is doing a lot of heavy lifting - it draws your eye straight to the front door and adds height without blocking the house.

The plant selection was deliberate. Everything chosen works well together in terms of texture and scale. The ornamental grasses bring a soft, fine-leafed contrast to the rounded shrubs, and the tree ties the whole composition together vertically. It's the kind of planting design where nothing feels like an afterthought.

Good landscaping isn't just about plants. It's about structure first - getting the walls, edging, and grading right so the plants have a proper stage to work from. That's what this retaining wall does for this yard. The plants finish the picture.
