Custom Backyard Build With Outdoor Kitchen and Retaining Wall

Some backyards have good bones but no direction. That's exactly what we were working with here - a solid home, decent yard, but nothing pulling it together into a space worth actually spending time in. The goal was to change that completely.

We designed and built a full outdoor living setup around the pool, anchoring everything with a custom retaining wall that steps the space down naturally from the house. That wall isn't just structural - it defines zones, adds visual depth, and gives the whole layout a finished, intentional look. Above it sits a large stamped concrete patio that flows right out from the back door.

The outdoor kitchen is the centerpiece of the upper patio. This is where the investment really pays off for homeowners. Instead of hauling food in and out of the house every time you're outside, you've got a fully equipped cooking and entertaining station right where the action is. It changes how you use the space - and how often.

We also carried the landscaping all the way around the perimeter. The columnar evergreens lining the pool edge, the flowering shrubs, the clean mulch beds - all of it was planned to frame the space without overwhelming it. The planting choices give the yard privacy and structure without making it feel closed in.

This is what a backyard can be when everything works together - the hardscape, the outdoor kitchen, the plantings, the grading. It takes real coordination to pull off, but the end result is a space that genuinely gets used and genuinely adds value to the home.
