How to Fix a Thin or Patchy Lawn This Fall
After a long, hot summer, it’s common for lawns to start looking thin, patchy, or worn down. Heat, drought, heavy foot traffic, weeds, and compacted soil can all take a toll on your grass.
Fortunately, fall is one of the best times of the year to rejuvenate your worn-out lawn.
Step One: Aerate
The first key step in restoring an overworked, compacted, thin lawn is core aeration. This process removes tiny cores of soil throughout your lawn, alleviating compaction and improving the ability for water, air, and nutrients to penetrate the soil. This is a must for almost any yard in Central Indiana!
Next Steps: Overseeding
Overseeding, as you probably know, adds new seed on top of the existing grass. This gives new grass the opportunity to grow and germinate on the top of that compacted and overworked soil – or in those small little cores you created with aeration! This fills in bare spots and helps make that thin lawn look full and healthy again.
Step Three: Keep New Seed Watered
Water will be crucial to new seedlings! You need to maintain moist conditions for your seed to germinate successfully and for new grass to establish. Once the seed has germinated and there's a good amount of growth, you'll transition to deeper watering less frequently.
